The Netherlands does not (yet) have a master’s degree in creative writing. To narrow the gap between education and professional practice, the Dutch Foundation for Literature, Literary Production House Winter Garden and the HBO writing courses ArtEZ, Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht entered into a partnership. Together they founded the Slow Writing Lab in 2015.

The academy’s nominated 9 different talents to work intensively on their own creative research for a year. The Slow Writing Lab is set up as a “free master”: the talents put together an individual program on a topic or theme relevant to their own development. They are intensively coached by their literary examples: writers, editors and directors. In addition, there are monthly plenary (work) meetings and master classes. In addition, the nine writing talents work on their individual trajectory. For this they have drawn up a curriculum in advance: what are they still lacking in knowledge and skills to be able to work as a professional writer.

Vormlust was asked to make a booklet for the 2019 edition. Each writer has his own place in the booklet, with surprisingly different layout designs. What connects the writers is the intro page where each writer gets an introduction based on a piece of text and a photo (made by Gert Jan Pos). All in a grid that can shift every time.
